Drunk Driving Accidents

According to the NHTSA, about three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives. "Driving while intoxicated" (DWI) and "driving under the influence" (DUI) do not only refer to drinking and driving. DWI and DUI can also mean that a driver was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an illegal drug, such as cocaine or marijuana.

In 2004 there were 16,694 traffic fatalities in alcohol-related crashes – one every 31 minutes. Alcohol-related auto accidents accounted for 39 percent of fatal crashes. What Do I Do After a Car Accident?

  • Check for injuries – call an ambulance if necessary.
  • If possible, move cars to a safe place.
  • Turn on hazard lights – use cones, flares, or warning triangles if available.
  • Call the police – even if the accident is minor.
  • Notify your insurance agent.

  • Get other driver’s information – driver’s license number, insurance information, registration, etc.
  • Do not sign anything.
  • Make immediate notes – damages, how the accident happened, etc.
  • If a camera is available, take pictures.
